If you are like me, you had a class on your schedule at some point in time in your Junior High or High School Career called “Keyboarding” or “Typing” class. I remember Mrs. Halling teaching us and that the only person who hit the 60+ wpm (words per minute for the younger folk) was Kelly. Kelly was amazing at typing and we all knew why– she had this internet stuff at home and would talk about ‘chatting’ with people from all over the world. (Ironically enough, I now talk to Kelly via Facebook as she lives in Hawaii with her Marine husband, Dave. I remind you to make sure to send some prayers for all our military families.)

Some people thought that the phase of chatting around the world would pass, but as we all know– boy were they ever wrong!!

Though that is not the point of the post, the skill or art of typing (in full words and complete sentences not in brb, ttyl, or :) s ) is something that all ages of people need to learn to do effectively. The old typewriters we learned on at our schools have already been declared surplus years ago, but our 1:1 laptops, a laptop cart, or even the good ‘ol computer lab can use www.typingweb.com to work on typing skills. No more top-binded books that fold over, now we can use an online service to improve typing skills.

There is an option to pay and recieve reports, but the scores could be recorded individually for grading purposes. Also these could just be exercises used in a computer class once a week for participation credit. The end ability to improve typing skills could be credit enough, but that is up to the individual teacher.

No matter how you decide to use this tool in your classroom, I recommend checking it out. The improvement in typing skills will benefit student work time significantly.
